Description of Project:

Excavation of an archaeological site on the hill of Arin-Berd, outside of Yerevan, at the 8th century BC Urartian fortress known as Erebuni Fortress. Dr. Ter-Martirosov will lead a team of 4 archaeologists, 1 botanist, 1 zoologist, 1 architect, 1 artist and 10 graduate students to study a recently discovered ancient cultural layer of 2 meters at the site.

 
Anticipated Results:

The objective of the project is to establish material evidence that will support the transition of the Kingdom of Urartu into the Kingdom of Armenia in the 6th century BC, and the subsequent arrival of the Achaemenid culture to the Armenian Plateau. This project will encompass the study of the earliest stages of Armenian identity and culture.
